Turn a PDF into an editable Word document without retyping it by hand. PDFKivo’s PDF to Word converter reads the selectable text in your file and builds a DOCX document you can open in Microsoft Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice Writer. It suits CVs, assignments, reports, letters and other text-based documents that need updating. If you mainly need the words changed, rather than the original design recreated exactly, this is the quickest and simplest route.

How to convert a PDF to Word

    1. Open the PDF to Word tool and drop your PDF into the box, or click to choose the file from your device.
    2. Check the file name shown on screen, so you know the correct document is loaded and ready.
    3. Select Convert to Word and watch the progress bar while your browser prepares the DOCX file.
    4. Download the finished document, open it in your word processor, and review the text before you start editing.

    Key features

    • Creates a standard DOCX file that opens in Word, Google Docs and LibreOffice Writer
    • Keeps the reading order of the selectable text, working through the document page by page
    • Inserts a page break between each original PDF page, so sections stay separated
    • Runs entirely in your browser, with no account, installation or file upload

    Good to know

This tool works with selectable text only. It does not include OCR, so a scanned PDF saved as pictures will produce little or no text. A quick test is to try selecting one word in your PDF: if you cannot highlight it, the file is probably scanned. Converting text does not recreate the original design, so complex tables, columns, embedded images, fonts and exact spacing are not preserved. Very large files can also take longer, especially on older phones or tablets.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the PDF to Word converter free to use?

Yes. You can convert PDFs into Word documents without paying, registering or creating an account.

Will my formatting stay exactly the same?

No. Plain text usually converts well, but tables, columns and images may move or be left out, so always check the result before relying on it.

Why is my converted file almost empty?

Your PDF is probably a scan made of images. This tool reads selectable text only and cannot recognise words inside pictures.

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. Files stay in your browser and conversion happens on your own device, so your document is not sent to us.
